Fado

Fado Is a sensual, mournful music genre that was began in the old Alfama district of Lisbon in the middle of the 19th century. I tried to capture the essence of the music in these pictures rather than straight photographs of performers and their environment. I tried to have the motion blurs originate with the performers using slow shutter speeds but the blurs created by their motion didn’t give the effect I wanted, that is, to emphasize the nature of the music as being mournful over someone who has been lost, is sensual in the sound of the guitars and the Fado being sung.

Rooftop abstractions

taking off on earlier abstractions I made. Each of these were taken from a high vantage point with the camera pointed down. In these abstractions I wanted to give a sense of the topography in each place: Porto, Alfama and Lisbon
